New Renal Dialysis Center

Isn't It Our Responsibility?
What began as a response to the needs of7 patients in 1980 culminated in the ground-breaking Tuesday August 1 for the new Renal Dialysis Center of Glens Falls Hospital on Broad Street.
David G Krucznicki, President of Glens Falls Hospital, remembers vividly thegenesis of the renal dialysis program at Glens Falls Hospital.
It was soon after Krucznicki had joined the staff of the Hospital in 1980and he was at a meeting with his predecessor, CEO Bill Philion. During the meeting a woman knocked at the door and asked Philion if she could take amoment of his time.

When Philion gave permission, the woman entered and placed a sheet of paper containing the names and addresses of seven people on Philion's desk.
Those seven people lived in the North Country area serviced by Glens Falls Hospital and each of the seven had to make 3 trips a week to either Albany or Burlington, Vermont for dialysis treatment.
The woman pointing to the list of people said to Philion, "Isn't it our responsibility?"
Philion with the support of the Glens Falls Hospital Board of Trustees decided that, yes, it was Glens Falls Hospital's responsibility and began a dialysis treatment program.
The program started with seven patients in 1980 who received 846 treatments that year. In 1999 85 patients received 11,586 treatments.
Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment. Without dialysis patients will die. Today the need is great for this program.
On Tuesday August 1 Glens Falls Hospital broke ground for a new state-of-the-art Renal Dialysis Center. When completed in February the Center willincrease the HospitalŐs capacity from 12 treatment areas to 18 with the potential to increase to 24 treatment areas - a doubling of capacity.
One of the benefits of the increase in treatment areas will be the ability to provide services to tourists and temporary visitors to our area. The new Renal Dialysis Center reflects a fiscal commitment of $2.6million by the Hospital. It will increase the area dedicated to treatment from 2,100 sq ft to 13,850 square feet. 26 full time staff members with specialized training in renal dialysis will man the new Center.
The Center scheduled to open in February 2001 is located at 3 Broad Street, Glens Falls adjacent to the Broad Street Health Services Campus of Glens Falls Hospital.
From Wilton it is a short drive up the Northway to Exit 18. The Center is two miles straight down the road. For more information call 792-3151.
