When the NYRA (New York Racing Association) decided to honor the winner of our Travers Stakes Race with a floral blanket tribute, NYRA asked Kings Mills floral designer, Susan Laing, to create the tribute.
Susan said, "As a floral designer, I had always wondered by our Race which is older than the Kentucky Derby didn't have a symbol."
She continued, "So when NYRA asked me to think about the Travers, I thought red and white carnations would be perfect. And red and white are the colors for NYRA."

Susan Laing with assistance of husband, Chris Laing, is creating the floral blanket salute to the winner of the Travers Stake.
So the Friday night before the Travers, Susan, husband Chris, and friends gathered at the Laing's Kings Mills home and they put fresh red and white carnations on the cloth backing.
Susan has another tradition. Nee Susan Lee, Susan is the daughter of the Wishing Well on Route 9 Lees. And Susan leaves the floral blanket over night in the Wishing Well's cold storage to keep the carnations dew-fresh.
But before Susan puts the blanket in cold-storage, Susan gives the patrons at the Wishing Well a preview of what the winner of the Travers Stakes will be wearing the next Saturday.
Susan does accept projects for floral design and may be contacted at 583-2693.
