Multi-millions - give or take a few million - and that is the commitment Target is making to back up it's expansion into the Northeast. When completed, the Distribution Center will have over 1,200,000 square feet, 201 loading docks and each dock can load or unload a tractor-trailer at the same time. (That's theoretical.)
But what is not theoretical is that those tractor-trailers will be loading and unloading merchandise for Target stores throughout the Northease.
And those stores are different. Target is a subsidiary of Dayton-Hudson of Minneapolis - one of the foremost fashion merchandisers in America. And Target remembers it's fashion heritage. Value-oriented Target has a unique look and appeal for people who like to save and who are fashion conscious. Local residents like Mary Ellen tell me, "I've shopped Target in Florida and I am looking forward to their opening in Wilton."
Target is right on schedule to complete their distribution center in Wilton for the Northeast - and for that Target relies on Walsh Construction and the leadership of project manager Mike Parrino.
And it is proven leadership. This is the second Targt Distribution Center for Walsh Construction. Mike is ably assisted by his Walsh team of Thano Tzuforos, Walter Wisniewski, Gary Magnussen and John O'Shea. Completion of construction is scheduled for February 1.
Opening of the new center will take place shortly afterward. And it will take more than a snowstorm to keep the leaders of our area from attending that Opening. The Target Center will eventually employ from 750 to 800 - and most of these employees will be recruited locally.
Target will have a management team of about 40. And Job Fairs for the Center will be starting in early 2000. Good Christmas news for our area.
Continuing good economic news for our area. Target's policy is to deal locally whenever possible. Some of the major sub-contractors at the site include Kubricky Construction of Glens Falls, Bast Hatfield of Clifton Park, DiGesare Mechanical of Schenectady, Alltek Energy Systems of Waterford, Overhead Door Co. of Glens Falls and AM contracting of Cohoes. And that makes good economic sense.
When Ace build their Center just a mile on the other side down Ballard Road, Kubricky built a gravel crushing plant on the Ace site using rock from the site for the Center's foundation. By Contrast, the Target site - just a mile up the road on the other side- had marshy soil that required crushed fill for the foundation.
That's why last fall there was a bucket brigade of dump trucks traveling up Ballard Road filled with gravel. (I timed 45 seconds between trucks during one period). Terry Breen, Target on site representatives, said: "It's amazing. A local firm like Kubricky has the resources they can just pull out of their pockets. They had the gravel pit ready to go off Rout 9 in Moreau" One of the advantages to dealing locally.
