Wilton and the Northeast welcomed T579 (that's how Target designates its newest distribution center) to our neighborhood Tuesday September 12, 2000. And it is a day Wilton and our area will put on our calenders to celebrate in 2001 and 2002 and every year after. With 1.200,000 million square feet and more space in the planning stage to be added, the Target Distribution Center is an economic asset that benefits Wilton and the Northeast. The present work force of nearly 800 is expected to double in the near future. Salary and wages will represent a multi-million dollar contribution to our regional economy every year.Wilton and the Northeast had much to celebrate September 12 but a major focus of the Target celebration was internal. Cary Parno, general manager ofthe facility said, "Our strength is our team and their teamwork."Wilton and the Northeast had much to celebrate September 12 but a major focus of the Target celebration was internal. Cary Parno, general manager ofthe facility said, "Our strength is our team and their teamwork." Beverly Atkison, of the BMP (Merchandise Breakpack/Packing) team was our tour guide. Beverly told us that when she went home at night, she could say, "I've accomplished something today." Beverly is proud to be a member of the Target team. Cary Parno knows that pride is shared throughout the Distribution Center. The facility came on line this spring so Cary has had five months to watch his team learn and develop. And it is a team that is local. Only a limited number of cadre has come from other Target facilities. So Tuesday the forklifts and the merchandise conveyer lines stopped and the Target team members joined Cary and honored guests in the spacious main receiving area. After a catered lunch for guests and the Target team, Cary welcomed visitors and thanked his team for their commitment to teamwork, safety andpersonal growth. Wilton Town Supervisor, Roy McDonald, spoke after Cary and welcomed Target to Wilton. Roy cited the efforts of the various Town Boards and the Town staff for their committed and whole-hearted efforts to expedite the Target development. Roy also saluted guests, Senator Hugh Farley, and Assembleyman, Bobby D'Andrea for their tireless efforts on behalf of the Target project on the State and national level. After the speeches Target had the pleasure of announcing community grants for the arts and for social programs. Highlighting the Arts Grant was an award to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center for $6,500 to bring artists into our schools to introduce children to the performing arts in an intimate setting. An award of $5,000 to Double H/Hole in the Woods Ranch highlighted the grants for social action. Target team members had already done volunteer service this spring in cleaning and maintenance work at the Ranch. |
